Bracebridge Generation Leverages Opus One DERMS® Platform to Build one of the First Net-Zero Communities in Canada

Funded by Natural Resources Canada, the objective of project SPEEDIER is to modernize the Town of Parry Sound’s grid to resolve issues of service limitations, improve power accessibility during high-demand time frames, and facilitate its shift towards becoming one of Canada’s first net-zero smart communities.


Powered by Opus One’s Optimization Engine (a grid three-phase AC unbalanced modeling and mathematical optimization engine), Opus One DERMS identifies the physical operating parameters, opportunities, and constraints of the network in terms of voltages, currents, real and reactive power, power factor, and losses.

Opus One DERMS module, which was deployed for this project, provides situational awareness of the distribution network while achieving high-level objectives such as peak shaving, power factor correction and other defined strategies, as well as managing the balance of DERs for microgrid operations. Opus One DERMS will coordinate the PV generation and battery storage with the loads to provide backup power to approximately 200 homes in northern Canada via features such as islanding management and distribution energy management.


The SPEEDIER team conducted a variety of simulated and live tests of the microgrid including grid-connected optimal dispatch of battery storage, as well as the protection and intentional seamless islanding capabilities with Opus One DERMS supervisory control and energy management. Opus One DERMS demonstrated its ability to identify physical network operating parameters and grid constraints, as well as provide real-time optimal control to meet the project’s goals. By adopting Opus One DERMS platform, Bracebridge Generation has created a template for distribution companies to be able to plan for decarbonization, while deferring costly upgrades to distribution and transmission infrastructure.
